DESCRIPTION OF AWARDS

The Garfield Weston Merit Scholarship for Colleges (GWMSC) program will distribute the following awards to students entering their 1st year of college studies in Canada for use during the 2006-07 academic year:

  • Up to 25 GWMSC National Awards which comprise: a tuition waiver from a consortium college renewable for one or two additional years; an $8,000 stipend renewable for one or two additional years; and access to summer program funding.
  • Up to 18 GWMSC Regional Awards which comprise:a $4,000 one-year scholarship.
  • Up to 15 GWMSC Provincial Awards which comprise:a $2,500 one-year scholarship.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

In order to be eligible for a GWMSC entrance award, a student must:

  • be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident;
  • be presently completing secondary school diploma/credentials or have been out of school for a minimum of three years (students presently enrolled in colleges doing their high school equivalency are eligible to apply);
  • be entering his or her first year of full-time college studies leading to a certificate, diploma or applied degree in the fall of 2006 (university transfer program or pre-university DEC students are not eligible);
  • be entering college studies of at least two years’ duration; and
  • have a minimum average of 75% in courses required for college program of choice.

SELECTION CRITERIA

A GWMSC Scholar is an outstanding college student who is:

  • passionate about his or her field of study, curious, and willing to try new things;
  • caring about his or her family, neighbourhood and community; and
  • truly interested in becoming involved and making a difference in society

NATIONAL SCHOOLLEADERSHIP AWARD

The $1000 National School Leadership Award, initiated in 2003 and funded by The W. Garfield Weston Foundation, is awarded to every high school which nominates a GWMSC National Award recipient. This award recognizes the essential contributions schools make in the development of young leaders and is intended to be used in the continuing development of leadership-based programs in your school.
